Two years later, in the winter, Uncle Lin brought good news: Ashan’s father was finally coming to Taiwan. Although Ashan’s mother was happy, she couldn't help but shed tears. That day, the chicken and duck at home were served on the table, and of course, Ashan’s mother's famous dried radish was included. The whole family joyfully had a feast with Uncle Lin.
After a long wait, Ashan’s father finally arrived in Taiwan before the New Year and hurried to Sanxia on the first weekend.
When Ashan’s father stepped into the house, Ashan’s mother and older sister were in the backyard feeding the chickens, while Ashan was in the living room organizing silkworms on a small desk made of wooden boxes. In the instant their eyes met, neither recognized the other. Ashan’s father stood at the doorway, uncertain if this was truly the home of his long-lost, dearly missed wife and children. Ashan also couldn’t recognize the unfamiliar man before him, especially with the sunlight streaming in from behind his father, making it hard to see his face clearly.
Time seemed to freeze momentarily, until Ashan’s father spoke, "Little boy, does Yang Yufen live here?" Hearing his mother's name, Ashan kept his eyes fixed on the man and shouted, "Mom! Come out, someone is looking for you."
Ashan’s mother came in from the backyard, wondering if it was really Ashan’s father. When she saw the familiar figure, she quickened her pace to greet him, "Xingguo, it really is you, come in quickly."
As she spoke, she pulled Ashan’s father inside and called towards the backyard, "Girl, come in, your father is back." Before Ashan’s father could sit down, Ashan’s older sister rushed into his arms, shouting, "Daddy! Daddy!"
The two women surrounded the long-lost man, momentarily forgetting about Ashan. Ashan couldn’t believe this was his father; the man looked so different from his memories and the photos. The tall, handsome young officer was now a man of average height, weary, and showing signs of age.
It wasn’t until his mother called him that Ashan timidly stepped forward, calling him "Dad" and then, with confusion, asked, "Dad, why have you become so old and shorter?" Ashan’s father laughed, "I haven’t gotten shorter, you’ve grown taller. Because you’ve grown up, of course I seem older."
