Finally, Ashan's sister was about to depart. Ashan's whole family went to the airport to see her off. After transferring buses twice, they arrived at Songshan Airport. It was Ashan's first time at the airport, and he saw a bustling crowd, more people seeing others off than flying.
It was 1958, a significant event to go abroad, especially for studying abroad, which was becoming increasingly popular. Taiwan's economy was still very tight at the time. Many students going abroad only had a school admission permit and a few hundred dollars, carrying the blessings of their entire families, to cross the Pacific to work and study. Therefore, the airport was filled with reminders and sighs.
Among the crowd, Ashan's family appeared particularly quiet. Ashan's father was always quiet, saying even less now. Ashan's mother and sister each had their own thoughts and not much to say. It was Ashan who held his sister's hand and softly said, "Sis, if you really think Chen Junsheng isn't right for you, when you come back, I'll talk to mom for you. At least you won't have to upset her."
Ashan's sister hugged him and silently walked towards the customs, not looking back. The air seemed to freeze all of a sudden. Ashan's parents stretched their necks, watching their daughter's figure, as if hoping for something.
Suddenly, Ashan's sister stopped, turned around, "Is she having second thoughts again, not wanting to go?" Ashan thought to himself. Ashan's sister extended her hand and waved to her family again and again. At this point, Ashan's father finally spoke, "Remember to write back!" "You're speaking now, old man, but the girl can't hear you!" Ashan's mother complained about her husband while wiping the tears of nostalgia and relief from her cheeks.
Finally, in the year Ashan was in the third year of junior high, his sister married into the Chen family in faraway Malaysia. Ashan's parents couldn't attend the wedding for the same reasons. The officiant from the bride's side was Ashan's father's cousin and his wife in Malaysia. This was a regret in Ashan's parents' lives; their only precious daughter got married, but they couldn't personally accompany her down the red carpet.
Neighbors in the village and relatives of Ashan's parents sincerely wished them well, expressing congratulations and admiration. However, behind their backs, some criticized, "Isn't it just for the sake of luxury that they forced their daughter to give up that Air Force guy and marry someone so far away?"
In short, within the bamboo fence, there had once been spring breezes and autumn rains. Everyone had different feelings, and they had to let them go.
