《Moments of Adolescent Growth》
In the highly competitive high school entrance exams, Ashan was fortunate to be admitted to a prestigious provincial high school in Taipei. His parents were very pleased, and his eldest sister sent him some T-shirts and a pair of nice leather shoes. With his stylish T-shirts and cool shoes, Ashan felt quite confident, like a little rooster with shiny feathers.
However, Ashan did not have a happy experience at this renowned high school.
Here's what happened. Many of his classmates had attended the middle school affiliated with this high school. Ashan, having no former middle school classmates in his class, had no close friends. He wanted to make new friends but found it hard to break into these small cliques. Especially since some students, favored by the class advisor, were the children of high-ranking government officials. These students often showed off and were later appointed as discipline representatives, tasked with reporting disobedient students to the teachers.
The class advisor, known as a "famous biology teacher," also taught many classes at a cram school outside of regular school hours. He hardly had time to care for the students in his class. When he did have time, he only used it to scold the "bad" students who had been reported.
Unfortunately, Ashan, being an outsider with a strong personality, naturally looked down on these "spies," as he saw them. As a result, he was often reported and frequently scolded by the teacher. This constant reprimanding led him to lose interest in learning, and his grades suffered.
Ashan had always been among the top three students in middle school, but now he had no idea where he ranked. However, this high school placed a strong emphasis on physical education, including basketball, soccer, baseball, gymnastics, and track and field. Ashan was very interested in these activities and diligently practiced them, which resulted in him developing a strong physique.
As they approached the third year of high school, the school started grouping students for the college entrance exams. At the time, everyone rushed to pursue the A-group for engineering and the C-group for medical studies, while those choosing the B-group were considered an anomaly.
Ashan had originally been interested in the humanities, but under the influence of his parents and relatives, who all believed he should go into the A-group, he eventually followed the crowd and chose the A-group.
