Finally, the fishing boat docked at an unknown pier in Hong Kong. The sky was still dim, and the refugees stumbled ashore in the darkness, guided by the faint light on the shore. At that moment, everyone embraced each other and wept by the shore. On one hand, they were relieved to have escaped death, but on the other hand, they were overwhelmed by the uncertain future ahead.
Under the eaves of a small shop by the shore, Ashan's family took a temporary rest. Ashan's mother was filled with a mix of sorrow and grief. Originally, if they had reached Kowloon, there would have been friends arranged by Ashan's father to pick them up. But now, in this unfamiliar place of Hong Kong, their belongings had been almost completely seized by foreign sailors. How would they live their days from now on?
As the day gradually brightened, the door of the small shop also creaked open, and the people inside peered out. They only glanced at Ashan's family before speaking in Cantonese that Ashan couldn't understand, rudely driving them away while holding their noses and murmuring.
It was only then that Ashan's mother noticed how disheveled they all looked. Not only were their clothes dirty, but their bodies also emitted a foul odor from days without bathing. Combined with exposure to the sea, their skin cracked, and their hair was long and unkempt, resembling a group of beggars.
Ashan's mother stood up helplessly. She strapped the baby to her back and tied the three children together with a rope, slowly making their way towards the village. In her heart, she could only pray silently for divine protection, hoping for a way out.
As they walked, they suddenly saw a figure approaching not far ahead, calling out, "Ashan! Ashan's mom!" Upon hearing this voice that they had longed for over the past days, a huge burden lifted from Ashan's mother's heart, and her pace quickened unconsciously. However, the string of children couldn't keep up, and Ashan, being the youngest, stumbled and fell. But Ashan didn't cry because he recognized Uncle Lin's voice.
Uncle Lin rushed over, tears of joy streaming from his eyes. He was a comrade of Ashan's father back in the military. Due to his involvement in underground activities, he had arrived in Kowloon earlier. Following the fall of Kowloon, he came to Hong Kong.
He shook Ashan's hand, telling Ashan's mother how he had been inquiring about the situation of small cargo ships every day. Finally, through a special channel, he learned that Ashan's family might have docked here these past few days. After waiting for several days, his efforts were not in vain. "Ashan's mom, you've been through a lot. If I hadn't been able to find you, I wouldn't know how to face Ashan's dad."
Then followed a moment of silence, tears streaming down the faces of the two adults. Ashan's mother shed tears of joy mixed with bitterness, and Uncle Lin was no different. Seeing Ashan's family inevitably reminded him of the family trapped in Hainan.
