A few days later, when Ashan's mother mentioned that a well-behaved child like his second brother must have been taken to heaven by God, Ashan took a kite to the place where the two brothers used to fly kites. He sent the family's memories of his second brother up to the sky with the kite.
That night, Ashan dreamt of his second brother, who was beside God. Holding the messages of remembrance that Ashan had sent, his brother told him to take good care of their mother.
One day, Uncle Lin brought a fellow villager to see Ashan's mother. He had just arrived in Hong Kong after a long journey and brought two pieces of news: one, Ashan's father had moved to Yunnan to join the guerrilla forces after the Battle of Haikou; and two, the grandparents of the baby had asked him to bring the child back to their hometown.
Ashan's mother was happy to hear news of her husband. As long as he was alive, there was hope of seeing him again. But what about the entrusted baby—should he be sent back?
The villager quickly explained, "The Communists have been good to us! They say we're all Chinese, and now that we've been liberated, the poor have risen up. The child's grandfather believes that if they could survive the Japanese occupation, dealing with the Communists, who are Chinese, should be easier. Look, I was even allowed to come here!" After buying the baby a few new clothes, Ashan's mother reluctantly handed the child over to the villager.
Ashan's mother asked Uncle Lin if he planned to return to Hainan. Uncle Lin said that because he worked underground, he didn't trust the Communists. If he went back, it would be a death sentence. He also mentioned that he would soon be transferred to Taiwan and suggested that Ashan's mother should also go to Taiwan. He believed that the Nationalist government there would take care of her and her family.
Ashan's mother agreed and asked Uncle Lin to help apply to the relevant government office in Hong Kong. Thanks to Uncle Lin's efforts, three months later, Ashan's mother, along with her eldest son and Ashan, boarded the government-arranged Sichuan ship and left Hong Kong.
As the Sichuan ship slowly sailed away from Hong Kong, Ashan's mother gazed back at the city, continuously saying, "Second son, Mama will come back to see you. Mama has always loved you. I even brought your clothes with me. Our family is still together."
Ashan waved towards Hong Kong, calling out, "Goodbye, Second Brother! I'll come back, and we'll fly kites together again!"
It wasn't until Ashan felt something wet on his head that he realized his mother was already crying rivers of tears.
