When Ashan was in middle school, he became fascinated with basketball after he stopped fighting. Older basketball fans might remember that it was the golden age of the Tri-Army Stadium, with idols like Chen Zuolie and Huang Guoyang. The boys in the village were no exception. Everyone was crazy about basketball, often playing until dark after school and on holidays, returning home sweaty.
One Sunday, the group went as usual to play basketball at a school for the deaf and blind (now known as Taipei School For The Hearing Impaired) near the village. During a vigorous drive to the basket, Ashan was pushed by an opponent, causing him to scrape his left elbow on the basketball post and forcing him to sit out and rest.
Just then, a girl in a white shirt and black skirt approached, and Ashan found her familiar. To his surprise, it was Wang Jingmei. After the initial joy of recognizing each other, they began to communicate by gesturing with their hands and writing on the ground.
It turned out that Jingmei's father had sent her all the way from Sanxia to Taipei's school for the deaf and blind to get a better education. Despite being apart for so long, they unexpectedly met again here.
Ashan asked about their neighbors and mutual friends from Sanxia and told Jingmei that he lived nearby. The village children, already familiar with students from the deaf and blind school, naturally accepted Jingmei as a new friend.
Since Jingmei boarded at the school and Ashan played basketball there almost every week, Ashan got to know many blind and deaf students through her. He played chess with the blind students, listened to their music performances, played basketball, and listened to the deaf students sing.
Ashan greatly admired these students. Despite their physical challenges, they had impressive learning abilities. He especially found it remarkable that he could never beat the blind students at chess, even when he tried to cheat.
Of course, Ashan would sometimes invite Jingmei home for dumplings. Everyone learned quite a bit of sign language from Jingmei, with Ashan learning the most, including how to ask, "Would you like to go to the movies with me?"
