In my dream, I was a wealthy man from the late Qing Dynasty. Though I had some martial arts skills and considered myself a righteous individual, I wasn't particularly skilled in combat.
I was in a bustling marketplace with my son, offering food. It seemed we had made a vow, and now we were fulfilling it by offering dumplings and hot and sour soup.
We called out to the crowd, saying, "Folks, come here for our offering to fulfill vows." Many villagers joyfully lined up to receive the food, and it didn't seem only the poor came; anyone willing to wait in line received our offerings, much to their delight.
While serving with my son, we also shared stories of loyalty, filial piety, and righteousness. The villagers commented on how rare it was to hear such tales nowadays.
A swordsman passed by and offered to help. Then came a villain, who seemed somewhat like a Taoist priest and had a history of collaboration, even coming to partake in our food.
The villagers were furious, calling him a traitor and blaming him for causing harm. They said he didn't deserve to enjoy what we provided.
I said that since this was a vow fulfillment offering, regardless of one's goodness or status, as long as there was repentance in their heart, we would treat everyone equally and provide food. Just as the villain was about to leave, amidst the villagers' insults, the swordsman stopped him and asked him to wait, not to leave yet.
The swordsman gave him a portion of food. As the villain was about to turn away, the swordsman stopped him again, cut off his queue, and said, "Don't serve outdated regimes that persecute your own people."
Initially feeling humiliated, the villain eventually turned back and tearfully confessed, "You're right. I shouldn't cling to the customs of the past regime." The villagers applauded; it seemed even a villain could be moved.
The swordsman was touched. The villain suggested a gesture of reconciliation and respect—a ritual where they would lock arms, a common practice in the martial world.
The swordsman agreed. However, as he locked arms with the villain, he suddenly cried out in pain. It turned out the villain had concealed a poisoned needle in his sleeve and jabbed it into the swordsman's armpit. I saw the villain flee.
We hurried to help the swordsman remove the needle and prevent the poison from spreading.
At that moment, my thoughts were, "Deceitful people remain deceitful. Don't expect them to change just because they've faced hardship. See this villain; even after receiving kindness, he still harmed the swordsman!"
