The following Saturday, after having lunch with his mother, she urged Ashan to take Ah-Mei out for a walk, saying that young people shouldn't spend all their time cooped up at home like her. When Ashan asked Ah-Mei where she'd like to go, she expressed her desire to visit the Grand Hotel.
Before heading to the hotel, Ashan deliberately drove Ah-Mei to the school for the hearing impaired and took a nostalgic detour around the military village where they used to live. Though the journey was mostly silent, both were quietly swept up in memories of their younger days, alternating between smiles and light sighs.
When they arrived at the Grand Hotel, Ashan parked the car and suddenly remembered that Ah-Mei had visited this place years ago during a trip to Taipei. Ah-Mei led him to a grassy slope facing Songshan Airport, where they sat down. As the breeze blew and the evening light dimmed, they watched planes take off and land in the distance. After a while, Ashan noticed tears welling up in Ah-Mei's eyes, just as they had on her last visit. Back then, he thought the tears were due to the wind blowing dust into her eyes.
This time, however, Ashan was more attentive. He gently asked why she always seemed to cry at this spot. Ah-Mei, using sign language and writing in Ashan’s hand, half-angrily and half-sorrowfully explained that on her previous visit, seeing the planes taking off had reminded her that Ashan had passed his TOEFL and entrance exams and would soon leave her to study abroad. She couldn’t help feeling sad and shedding tears.
And why was she crying this time? Ah-Mei explained that over the years, Ashan had always been like a wooden block, never showing that he cared for her. She brought him back to this place to see if he would leave her behind, just like the planes flying off into the distance. At that moment, Ashan finally pulled Ah-Mei into a tight embrace and, in her palm, wrote a promise: "I love you."
That evening, when Ashan and Ah-Mei returned to his house, Ashan’s mother had already prepared dinner. As usual, Ah-Mei helped serve food and took care of his mother. But this time, Ashan’s mother noticed Ah-Mei also serving Ashan, carefully selecting pieces of his favorite braised pork for him. Watching this, Ashan’s mother smiled to herself, thinking that the two had finally connected.
After dinner, Ashan took the initiative to help Ah-Mei clear the table and bring the dishes to the kitchen. His mother watched the young couple wash and tidy up together with a beaming smile, silently thinking to herself that a wedding might not be far off.
