Speaking of Ashan’s mother’s braised pork, one cannot help but recall the early days in Sanxia, where the annual Sacred Pig Competition was the most festive event during the Lunar New Year. This tradition originated from the ancestors’ ritual of “offering sacrifices to the mountain gods for peace.” Later, since the sixth day of the Lunar New Year marks the birthday of Qing Shui Zu Shi, the patron deity of Sanxia, the religious practice merged with local customs, leading to the establishment of the annual Sacred Pig Competition in front of Qing Shui Zu Shi Temple. After the competition, the winning pig owners would distribute pork to the gathered crowd, making braised pork a signature dish in nearly every household in Sanxia.
Naturally, the taste of braised pork evoked childhood memories for both Ashan and Ah-Mei, inspiring them to plan a visit back to Sanxia. Ah-Mei’s parents also expressed their desire to join them in revisiting old neighbors. In truth, everyone had their own thoughts—Ashan and Ah-Mei sought the elders’ blessings, while the parents eagerly awaited the young couple to formally express their commitment to each other.
Standing on Changfu Bridge over the Sanxia River, in front of the Qing Shui Zu Shi Temple, Ashan and Ah-Mei informed Ah-Mei’s parents of their intention to marry. The parents gladly gave their blessing. They then entered the temple to offer incense, solemnly informing Heaven, their ancestors, and the patron deity of their joyful union. At last, they received divine approval and blessings for their marriage.
As both families began discussing wedding arrangements, Ashan brought unexpected good news from work.
The engineering company where Ashan worked had been deeply involved in Taiwan’s "Ten Major Construction Projects," employing nearly 10,000 people. To secure future growth, the company needed to expand into large-scale international projects once domestic construction was completed.
To qualify for these international bids, the company had to demonstrate advancements in operational management, financial planning, engineering technology, resource management, and project oversight through computerized systems. As a result, the company was in the process of establishing an Information Department. Due to his outstanding performance, Ashan was selected as a reserve staff member for this new department and was transferred back to Taipei for specialized training in computerization and business system development.
Autumn is a season of harvest, and in the fall of 1976, Ashan and Ah-Mei’s love blossomed, receiving the blessings of their families and friends. Their journey culminated in a lifelong union, bound together in everlasting harmony.
