《Taiwan’s Growth Through Adversity》
When Ashan’s family first arrived in Taiwan, the island was in a post-war recovery period, struggling to rebuild from the devastation. During this time, the government implemented land reforms under the "Land to the Tiller" policy, restored power and water systems, stabilized the financial sector, promoted light industry, and established export processing zones. After more than a decade of dedicated effort, Taiwan’s economy began to stabilize and gradually transitioned into a more prosperous society.
However, as Taiwan entered the 1970s, it faced significant challenges on the global stage. In 1971, Taiwan was forced to withdraw from the United Nations, becoming an international orphan. Shortly after, the first global oil crisis struck, dealing a double blow to Taiwan’s political standing and economic growth.
In response, Premier Chiang Ching-kuo launched the "Ten Major Construction Projects" in 1974, a large-scale national infrastructure plan that included highways, an international airport, railway electrification, new seaports, a major steel plant, shipbuilding, and petrochemical industries. It was during this period that Ashan joined the engineering efforts, contributing his skills to Taiwan’s development. By 1979, as these ambitious projects were completed, Taiwan had risen to become the leading economy among the "Four Asian Tigers."
Over the years, Ashan dedicated himself to learning computer technology, engineering calculations, and information management within his company’s IT department. His hard work paid off—after completing Taiwan’s Ten Major Construction Projects, his company secured international engineering bids, successfully undertaking major infrastructure projects across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, including highways, ports, waterworks, and power systems. Recognized for his technical expertise, foreign language proficiency, and outstanding performance, Ashan was promoted to Engineering Information Specialist, actively participating in international project bidding and construction management.
