《Wind Blows, and the Grass and Trees Appear as Soldiers》
In 1991, Taiwan experienced an economic boom, with opportunities so abundant that it was as if money was flooding the streets (implying unlimited business opportunities).
Lillian changed houses, bought properties, and invested in stocks, all with considerable success. The government's preferential 18% interest rate on savings for public servants provided an advantage, making her start easier than others. Her personal salary was also high, and she never hesitated to utilize her wealth. Financial freedom brought a life of ease and freedom.
To facilitate easier access, she moved from an apartment to a building with an elevator. Legally, Smith was still the father of the child. Lillian also demanded that he cover the living expenses and the substantial costs associated with the child's growth.
The couple's issues revolved around financial disputes. Meeting each other was more trouble than it was worth, let alone discussing feelings. The child was born with severe health problems, requiring frequent hospital visits and numerous evaluations. Each year added more burdens.
Eventually, the child was diagnosed with "severe intellectual disability," a lifelong condition. The most pitiful are the caregivers who must always be by the child's side. Thankfully, Lillian's mother moved in to help, balancing two households. She had to care for her husband while not wanting her daughter to exhaust herself. Everyone was caught in emotional turmoil. It wasn't a home; it was a battlefield, a prison, a place of constant tension with no room for error.
The child walked unsteadily, with misaligned eyes, a slightly crooked mouth, constant drooling, and inward-growing knees. In an ordinary family, the child's fate would have been much worse.
Lillian was only human, and even the strongest person could break. She applied for early retirement with the sole intention of dedicating herself to the child. She aimed to change the child's fate and ensure the child's survival, pursuing any means necessary.
In an era with limited information, magazines, TV, and experts were mixed media sources.
At 53, Lillian officially left her role as an "iron lady," becoming a symbol of maternal sacrifice.
The child participated in special education, receiving simple skill training and dedicated care, always accompanied by a caregiver. Despite spending money on ineffective treatments, well-meaning suggestions from knowledgeable people were seen by Lillian as unwelcome criticism. To her, they were just making idle comments.
Meanwhile, deceitful merchants exploited the situation, filling the house with an array of disability aids and teaching materials. Though neatly arranged, the space appeared crowded.
