《Unable to Bear the Burden》
The overwhelming negativity made Lillian lose her will to fight. The legal fees for suing Smith all had to be paid by her, causing severe financial strain. As her child grew, more problems arose; he often had skin allergies and slow healing wounds.
Day after day, expenses flowed like water. The harsh realities of life forced her to send her mother back to her brothers for rotational care to lighten her load of responsibilities. In this adversity, no one showed her any sympathy or offered help.
Disheartened, she saw her mother constantly making excuses for her sons. Lillian also suspected her money was disappearing overnight, wondering where the so-called justice was. She protested silently, heartbroken and distressed. Her melancholy and serious expression made her seem unapproachable.
Taiwan faced economic depression. In 2012, many factories moved to mainland China, making everyone anxious about adapting. This transition, coupled with a financial crisis, hurt the wallets of the rich.
Among her siblings, Lillian was the most stable and secure. The unpredictable international situation made life even harder. Lillian paid the price for her wrong choices, struggling without any appreciation. A series of misfortunes left her irritable and anxious, sometimes unable to control her temper, even feeling a violent impulse. Everyone seemed to annoy her.
Through a women's group, she met a friend named Li Feique, affectionately called "Sister Que." She became Lillian's best listener, understanding and compassionate, a mentor and close friend, her greatest refuge.
At every gathering, Lillian had endless things to say. She complained about Smith's behavior, worried about her son's future, and resented her mother's favoritism. If not for the foreign caregiver, her mother would have long been sent to a nursing home.
Taiwan's greatest beauty is its people. Sister Que often invited Lillian to various activities, introducing local delicacies and different cultures. Poor Lillian, her mind constantly occupied with her son, couldn't find time to rest. She forgot that sunlight improves sleep, flavorful food lifts the spirit, and oxygen eases worries.
Having missed out on so much, Lillian hesitated. Should she continue fighting with Smith?
